Foreign visitors can buy KTX tickets on KORAIL’s English website at letskorail.com or in the KORAIL+ app, and both accept overseas credit cards. Seats go on sale at 7:00 a.m. Korea time, two months before the travel date. Until October 1, 2026, that window was one month, so older guides may give you the wrong number. A KORAIL Pass can save money on a multi-city trip, but it only gives you the right to ride. You still have to reserve a seat separately.

Booking on the KORAIL English website

The official site is the best place to start because it doesn’t require a Korean phone number.

Open letskorail.com and choose English from the language menu in the top right corner.

Enter your departure and arrival stations, date, and time. Some trains leave from Yongsan or Suseo instead of Seoul Station, so check the station name on the result before you pick a train.

Choose a train and a seat class.

Type your name exactly as it appears on your passport.

At the payment step, select the option for a card issued overseas. Your card may ask for 3D Secure verification through your bank’s app or a text message.

Save the confirmation to your phone, or print it.

The Korea Times reported the move to a two-month window in September 2026. One older notice on KORAIL’s own English pages may still say one month. If the two numbers conflict, check the booking calendar on the site for your date.

Booking in the KORAIL+ app

KORAIL+ is the app that replaced the separate KORAIL Talk and SRT apps after the two operators merged on September 1, 2026. If an older guide tells you to download Korail Talk, look for KORAIL+ instead. Foreign cards have been reported to work in the app, though acceptance can differ by card. If a payment fails in the app, try the website before retrying the same card.

If your foreign card gets declined

Overseas cards fail at checkout for a few ordinary reasons. The card may not have 3D Secure enabled, the bank may block the charge as unusual, or the browser may have blocked the verification pop-up. Allow pop-ups, turn on overseas payments with your bank, and try once more. If it still fails:

Try the same booking in the app, or on the website if you started in the app.

Use a booking platform such as Trip.com or Klook. Trip.com’s KTX page says it takes foreign cards and PayPal. Compare the total with KORAIL’s own fare before you pay.

Buy at a station staffed counter. Some travelers report that station kiosks require a Korean-issued card, while staffed ticket counters may accept foreign cards.

Is the KORAIL Pass worth buying?

For a short trip, often not. The September 2026 merger with SRT came with an average fare cut of about 10% on KTX routes, which makes single tickets cheaper than they were. A Seoul–Busan ticket costs roughly ₩55,000 to ₩60,000 depending on the train and date, and the cheapest adult passes have been listed from about ₩131,000. Passes have gone through several changes this year, so check the current price and pass types on KORAIL’s pass page before comparing.

A rough way to compare: one Seoul–Busan round trip is around ₩110,000 to ₩120,000, which is less than the cheapest pass. A pass may become worthwhile if you take three or more long one-way trips within its validity period, such as traveling from Seoul to Busan, then to Gyeongju, and back to Seoul.

Your trip

Probably better

One round trip, or two one-way rides

Individual tickets

Three or more long rides in a few days

KORAIL Pass

Several short regional hops

Compare fares first, since short rides can cost little

Traveling with 2 to 5 adults on the same plan

Look at the Saver Pass

Eligibility is narrow. The pass is for visitors holding a foreign passport who have been in Korea for less than six months, per the Korea Rail Pass entry on Wikipedia. Korean citizens, including dual nationals, are excluded, according to Pelago’s listing. It doesn’t cover subways or temporary tourist trains. Older guides say it doesn’t cover SRT either. Since SRT has merged into KTX, check on the pass page whether trains from Suseo are now included.

Reserving seats with a pass

Buying the pass doesn’t put you in a seat. You get a 16-digit pass number, and you use it on KORAIL’s site to reserve each train. Resellers describe two free seat reservations per day. After those are used, you can still board on a standing basis with the pass and your passport. Note that the reservation window for pass holders may not match the two-month window for regular tickets, so look at what the pass page says.

Reserve the trains you care about as soon as your dates are firm. Friday evenings, weekends, and holiday periods fill first.

Boarding the KTX

Korean train stations have no ticket gates for KTX. Check the departure board for your platform, then find the car and seat number shown on your ticket. A crew member checks tickets on board.

Bring your passport. With a pass, bring the pass voucher and your seat ticket too. Pass sellers state that a screenshot of a seat ticket isn’t accepted, so use the app or a printout instead.

Before your trip

Book as soon as your dates are fixed if you’re traveling on a holiday weekend. KORAIL hadn’t announced the booking schedule for the Seollal 2027 holiday as of early October, so it’s worth watching its notices for that.

Install Naver Map or KakaoMap before you fly, and bring some Korean won in cash. Those two things prevent most of the trouble first-time visitors run into. The rest of this list covers taxis, tipping, table manners, trash cans, and the entry rules you should check before you book.

Apps and Getting Online

1. Download Naver Map or KakaoMap

Google Maps works in Korea for place listings, reviews, and public transit routes. However, turn-by-turn walking and driving navigation is limited, and walking segments of transit routes are often displayed as dotted lines. Korea conditionally approved Google’s request to export detailed map data in February 2026, and Google has said it plans to add navigation. As of late August 2026, no launch date had been given.

So for now, put Naver Map (English interface available) or KakaoMap on your phone before you leave home. Both give walking, bus, and subway directions. Keep Google Maps for restaurant searches and reviews.

2. Get a Translation App and a Taxi App

Papago handles Korean better than most general translators, especially for menus and signs. Download it and the Korean language pack before the trip.

For taxis, Kakao T is the app Koreans use, but a foreign phone number and card don’t always get through its sign-up checks. Kakao Mobility also offers a separate app for visitors called K.Ride, and Uber works in Korea too. Whichever you choose, set it up and add your card at home, because receiving a verification text on airport Wi-Fi can be slow. Check the fare estimate in the app before you confirm the ride.

3. Sort Out Mobile Data Before You Land

All of the above needs a connection. An eSIM or a pocket Wi-Fi device booked in advance means your maps work the moment you leave the airport.

Money and Transit

4. Carry Some Cash for T-money

Cards are accepted in most shops and restaurants in Korea. However, reloading a T-money card at convenience stores generally requires cash. A T-money card can be bought at convenience stores (CU, GS25, 7-Eleven), subway stations, and the airport, but topping it up at a convenience store counter generally takes Korean won cash. Some newer station machines accept foreign cards, though that varies, so don’t count on it for your first ride.

Many guides suggest starting with ₩10,000 to ₩20,000 for the first day and topping up as you go. The minimum top-up is ₩1,000, and the card holds up to ₩500,000. Unused balance can be refunded at certain convenience stores, usually for a small fee.

Cash also helps at traditional markets and some street food stalls.

5. Skip the Tip

Tipping isn’t part of the culture in Korean restaurants, taxis, or hotels. Service is already built into the price, and leaving money on the table can cause confusion. If a server runs after you with the cash you left behind, they’re trying to be helpful.

Manners and Dining

6. Take Your Shoes Off When the Setting Calls for It

Homes, some traditional restaurants with floor seating, and temple stay accommodations expect you to remove your shoes. A raised floor level or a shoe rack near the entrance is the usual sign. Wear socks without holes on days you’re likely to visit one of these places.

7. Keep Chopsticks Out of Your Rice

Standing chopsticks upright in a bowl of rice resembles incense offered at ancestral rites, so it’s considered bad manners at the table. Rest them on the chopstick rest or the side of your plate when you pause.

8. Use Both Hands With Elders

When you hand something to an older person, receive something from them, or pour a drink, using both hands shows respect. Holding your forearm or supporting your elbow with the other hand works as well.

9. Leave Priority Seats Empty

Seats marked for older adults, people with disabilities, and pregnant passengers are usually left open on buses and subways, even when the car is nearly empty. Regular seats are fair game.

Before You Go

10. Check K-ETA Rules for Your Passport

Whether you need a K-ETA depends on your nationality. South Korea extended its temporary K-ETA exemption to December 31, 2026, and it covers travelers from the United States among other countries. Visitors from countries outside that list still need to apply before boarding. Applying anyway is optional for exempt travelers, and a K-ETA holder may skip the separate electronic arrival card.

The exemption has an end date, so if your trip is in 2027 or later, look at the official K-ETA site (k-eta.go.kr) close to departure.

A Note on Trash

Public trash cans are scarce on Korean streets. Convenience stores and subway stations are the usual places to find one, and many visitors end up carrying a small bag for wrappers and cups. Littering rules exist, so holding onto your trash until you reach a bin is the safer habit.

If you’re planning the first two days now, a map app, a T-money card, and a few thousand won in your pocket will cover more than you’d expect.

You can book an English personal color analysis in Seoul without speaking Korean, provided you choose a studio that clearly offers English support. Some studios have English-speaking analysts, while others provide an interpreter, sometimes for an additional fee. Check which option is included before paying.

Two Ways English Works at a Studio

Some studios have analysts who speak English themselves. A Myeongdong listing on Expedia and Travelocity describes an English-speaking analyst, while Season of You in Yongsan lists English-speaking staff on Trazy.

Other studios conduct sessions in Korean with an interpreter. Color of You in Hongdae offers translation services in English and several other languages, according to its Creatrip listing. If interpretation costs extra, the total can be considerably higher. One traveler’s account described paying KRW 25,000 per hour for an interpreter under a spring discount, compared with the usual KRW 50,000. This is an example from one studio, not a standard industry rate.

Where to Book

Travel platforms let you browse English-language listings and pay by card. Booking directly means contacting the studio through its own channels, where the process may differ.

Creatrip. Many personal color listings carry an “English Available” label. Some bookings include a free Creatrip Buddy service that provides English support through WhatsApp or LINE, depending on the listing.

Trazy. It lists Season of You and The Kolor, which offers consultations in English, Japanese, Chinese and Korean.

Trip.com and Klook. A Seoul travel guide from HaniSeoul recommends these platforms for finding studios with English support.

Expedia and Travelocity. Both list the Koreal personal color session in Myeongdong, with free cancellation shown on the listing.

Direct booking. Some studios accept reservations through Instagram or messaging channels. Dustmoth Stography is also listed on Creatrip. Its listing says verification through the provided contact begins seven days before the reservation, so read the confirmation instructions carefully.

Studios That List English Support

The following options have been described as offering English support or appearing on English-language booking platforms. Check the individual listing before booking, as prices, availability and service arrangements can change.

Color of You (Hongdae). Near Hongik University Station. Creatrip’s older blog post lists a 60-minute, one-on-one color consultation at KRW 193,000. Treat this as a reference price and check the current listing before booking.

Season of You (Yongsan). Offers private sessions near Sinyongsan Station, with English-speaking staff listed on Trazy.

The Kolor (near Gasan Digital Complex Station). Offers 30-minute basic and 60-minute special consultations. Its description mentions a colorimeter skin tone reading and a review of the makeup products you bring.

Koreal (Myeongdong). Listed as a one-hour session with an English-speaking analyst. Prices have been reported at around $141–$179, depending on the booking platform and date.

Dustmoth Stography. Listed on Creatrip. Asia Tatler describes a three-hour visit that includes a color theory course, draping and styling tips at a location in Geumcheon-gu, outside the Gangnam and Hongdae areas commonly featured in travel guides.

Vic’s Lab (Hongdae). A travel guide describes it as an established option, with a reported price of KRW 180,000. The guide does not clarify how English support is provided, so confirm the language arrangements directly before booking.

Creatrip’s English-language listings for Myeongdong, Hongdae, Garosugil and Cheongdam have shown starting prices of approximately $75–$157, with an “English Available” label. These figures are listing snapshots rather than guaranteed current prices.

What It Costs

HaniSeoul gives a general range of KRW 100,000–180,000 for a one-on-one session lasting one to one and a half hours, and KRW 80,000–120,000 per person for a two-person session. Packages that include interpretation, styling or body-shape analysis may cost more. The older Color of You listing mentioned above is already above the upper end of that general range.

Before paying, check three things on the booking page: the session length, whether English support or interpretation is included, and whether makeup or styling advice is part of the package.

How Far Ahead to Book

HaniSeoul’s guide recommends booking popular studios at least one to two months ahead. Individual booking policies vary, however. Color of You’s listing has stated a minimum one-day advance reservation, while Waug says bookings are confirmed within 24 hours. These are platform-specific arrangements, not guarantees of availability.

If your travel dates are fixed, booking once your flights are confirmed gives you more time to compare studios and choose a suitable appointment.

Before Your Appointment

Bring the makeup you use regularly. Studios such as The Kolor review your products and may suggest options that suit your results.

Check the studio’s instructions about makeup before arriving. Some consultations recommend a bare face or minimal makeup so the analyst can assess your natural coloring.

Wear clothing without a high neckline or a strong color near your face. During draping, colored fabric is held near your skin, so clothing that leaves your neck area accessible can make the process easier.

If your session will be conducted in Korean, ask whether you can bring an interpreter or friend. Studios may have different room and guest policies.

Save your booking confirmation and the studio’s map link. Some studios are located on upper floors of buildings with small signs, so having the address and directions ready can help.

Session lengths and language arrangements vary across listings, so the booking page for your specific appointment is the best place to confirm the details before you go.

Yes, credit cards are widely accepted in Korea. Restaurants, cafés, convenience stores, department stores and hotels take foreign Visa and Mastercard cards without trouble in most cases. Foreign credit cards work in most everyday settings, but there are still a few exceptions: subway gates, some street food stalls, and self-order kiosks that don’t accept overseas-issued cards. In most cases, a foreign card and a small amount of Korean won are enough for a trip. A foreign card plus a small amount of Korean won covers nearly all of it.

How Common Cash Is in Korea

Korea’s central bank runs a survey on how adults pay in physical stores. In its 2024 results, cash accounted for 15.9 percent of transactions, behind credit cards at 46.2 percent and debit cards at 16.4 percent (Korea Herald summary of the Bank of Korea survey). Cash use was far higher among people over 60 than among people in their 30s to 50s. That survey covers Korean residents, so it says little about how a foreign card behaves, but it does explain why many shops no longer bother with cash.

Where Foreign Credit Cards Work

Foreign-issued Visa and Mastercard cards are accepted at restaurants, cafés, convenience stores, department stores, hotels and many taxis (How to Pay in Korea as a Tourist, K-Actually). Insert the chip card or tap it, and the payment goes through like any other.

Problems show up in a few places:

Self-order kiosks at small restaurants and cafés, some of which are built for Korean cards only

Older payment terminals at small independent shops

Some app-based payments, where the app asks for a Korean card or phone number

If a kiosk rejects your card, the counter usually works. If a kiosk rejects your card, try paying at the counter instead. Staff may be able to process the payment through a standard terminal.

Delivery apps have been changing. Baemin, one of the largest, announced that from June 2, 2026 its Apple Pay checkout would accept overseas-issued Visa, Mastercard, JCB and Amex cards (Asia Business Daily). Other apps vary, so test the checkout before you’re hungry.

Apple Pay works at terminals that support contactless payment, and not every small shop has one. Carry the physical card as well.

Where You Still Need Cash

Some traditional market stalls and street food vendors take cash only, and others take cards, so it differs from stall to stall. T-money transit cards are also topped up with cash at many machines, which matters more for the next section.

A few cash-only moments are easy to run into: a snack stall at a market, a small purchase where the vendor waves off the card, or a locker or coin-operated machine. For a one-week trip, ₩50,000 to ₩100,000 in cash is a reasonable starting point, though the amount you’ll need depends on your itinerary. This is a practical estimate, not an official recommendation. Bring more if you plan to visit traditional markets or smaller towns where cash may be more useful. Plan on more if your itinerary leans toward markets outside Seoul.

Paying for the Subway and Buses

Public transportation is one area where payment options changed in 2026, so check the publication date when reading older guides.

Since March 17, 2026, about 440 ticket machines at 273 stations on Seoul Subway Lines 1 to 8 accept foreign-issued credit and debit cards. They sell single-journey tickets and the Climate Card, an unlimited pass for Seoul (Seoul subway guide, Luggagent, Foreign Cards on Seoul Subway, Koursea). What you still can’t do is tap a foreign contactless card on the gate itself.

Tmoney, which runs much of the transit payment system, has said it plans to add direct foreign contactless payment on Seoul city buses in 2027, followed by Incheon and airport buses (Korea Herald). Until that arrives, a physical T-money card is still the simplest way to ride.

On an iPhone, Mobile T-money in Apple Wallet is another route. Mastercard announced in April 2026 that Mastercard holders could load a Mobile T-money balance this way (Mastercard press release). Reports at different times disagree on whether Visa is supported, so check the app before you rely on it.

WOWPASS, Travel Wallet and Other Prepaid Cards

A prepaid card can help in the situations where a foreign credit card gets declined.

WOWPASS is a prepaid card you load at machines in Korea, including at airports, subway stations and hotels. Its payment balance works at stores that accept Korean cards, by inserting the chip, including stores that don’t accept international cards (WOWPASS guide). It also carries a T-money function, and that is where people get caught: the T-money balance is separate from the payment balance. A full payment balance won’t open a subway gate. The WOWPASS app can move money from the payment balance to T-money, and cash at stations and convenience stores also works (WOWPASS FAQ).

Travel Wallet began as a card Koreans use when traveling abroad. It is now also marketed to visitors coming to Korea as a Visa prepaid card with an app for currency exchange and a Korean transit function, according to its recent promotional material in Japan (example). Because it runs on the Visa network, it may behave more like a foreign Visa than like WOWPASS at a kiosk that rejects overseas cards. I couldn’t confirm that from an official source, so treat it as unverified.

Neither card is required. If your own card works at the places you plan to eat and shop, a prepaid card mostly adds backup.

ATMs and Currency Conversion

Many Korean ATMs only accept local cards. Look for machines marked “Global ATM” or “Global Service,” which are common in airports, subway stations and convenience stores. Reported fees at big-bank Global ATMs run about ₩3,500 to ₩4,000 per withdrawal, and convenience store machines tend to charge more (Cities Insider). Your own bank may add its own fee on top.

Use a debit card for cash. A credit card withdrawal can be treated as a cash advance, with separate fees and interest, so ask your issuer first.

When a terminal or ATM asks whether to charge you in your home currency or in Korean won, choose won. Choosing your own currency triggers dynamic currency conversion, and the rate is generally worse than the one your card network would apply.

What to Pack

One credit card with international use enabled, a second card as backup, and a small amount of won. Add T-money or WOWPASS if you plan to ride the subway a lot, and check the Mobile T-money app if you carry an iPhone. Banks sometimes block foreign transactions unprompted, so it helps to tell yours you’re traveling.

Payment options in Korea continue to evolve, so check the latest transit and payment information before your trip.

Daiso Korea must-buy lists usually start with two things: VT Reedle Shot and makeup lines created specifically for the store. Both are worth checking out if you’re looking for affordable Korean beauty products. This guide covers which items to look for, what makes good souvenirs, and how to navigate stock availability and tax refunds at the large Myeongdong branch.

How Daiso Korea Pricing Works

Daiso Korea sells everything at six fixed prices: 500, 1,000, 1,500, 2,000, 3,000 and 5,000 won. The top tier is 5,000 won, which comes to a few US dollars depending on the exchange rate. Cosmetics tend to sit in the 3,000 and 5,000 won tiers.

With a maximum price of 5,000 won, it’s easy to budget for skincare, makeup, and souvenirs without worrying about expensive surprises.

K-Beauty Worth Buying at Daiso Korea

Beauty has become a major part of the store’s business. At the Myeongdong Station branch, beauty is the top-selling category, and a large share of purchases there are made with foreign cards.

VT Reedle Shot

The product that gets mentioned most is the VT Reedle Shot. Korean press reported that the Daiso version sells for 3,000 won, while a similar VT product at Olive Young costs over 30,000 won. The two aren’t the same size, so treat it as a price-per-use comparison rather than an identical product at a discount.

Before you use it, note that VT describes Reedle Shot as an intensive routine that may cause a tingling sensation. The level of intensity varies by version. If you’re trying Reedle Shot for the first time, VT recommends starting with the 50 or 100 version. The brand also advises against using the 100 and 300 versions together. Avoid applying it to irritated skin, and patch-test first if you have sensitive skin.

It also tends to sell out, which is covered in the tips below.

Makeup Lines Made for Daiso

Several Korean brands now sell separate lines at Daiso. Too Cool for School’s TAG is one of them, in the 1,000 to 5,000 won range. Creatrip’s roundup of Daiso beauty buys also names Son & Park, IPKN and A’pieu among the brands with products there. Lip and cheek balms, contour and highlighter duos, and cushion compacts are the categories travelers tend to look for first.

Lineups change often, so use the names as search terms in the store rather than a fixed shopping list.

Skincare From Pharmacy and Dermatology Brands

Skincare is the other half of the beauty section. Brands like Madeca21, Medi-Peel, and Sungboon Editor have been reported to carry Daiso lines of toner pads, soothing pads, and sheet masks. If you’re after something calming for travel-worn skin, that’s the aisle to check. Confirm the label and the price on the shelf, since these ranges rotate.

Korean Souvenirs Under 5,000 Won

The gift section is easier to browse than the beauty section, and the pricing keeps it cheap. These come up in travel guides as popular picks:

Stainless steel spoon and chopstick sets, which work as a practical gift and cost about 1,000 to 3,000 won.

Mother-of-pearl style stickers and masking tape, a Korean craft pattern that suits stationery.

Hangul and hanbok themed magnets and keychains in the 1,000 to 3,000 won range.

Licensed character stationery and phone accessories for people who collect them.

The prices above come from travel guides, so expect small differences in the store.

Which Daiso to Visit

Small neighborhood branches carry only a part of the beauty range. The best choice for tourists is the Myeongdong Station branch, which occupies 12 floors. It was expanded from five floors in 2024, added an on-site tax refund system, and has multilingual staff. A Trazy guide to the largest Daiso stores in Seoul suggests starting on the top floor and working down, which saves backtracking in a building that size. It also lists the Hongik University and Gangnam Express Bus Terminal branches among the other big ones.

Tax Refund at Daiso

Foreign visitors can get a VAT refund at stores that take part in the tax-free system, and Daiso’s Myeongdong branch has on-site refund handling. Bring your passport. The minimum spend and the way the refund is handled depend on the store, so check at the counter before you pay. Published guides don’t agree on the minimum, with some giving 15,000 won and at least one 2026 guide giving 30,000 won. Daiso items are cheap enough that you’d need a fairly full basket to reach either number.

Is Daiso Korea the Same as Daiso Japan?

No. The Korean chain is run by Asung Daiso. Until December 2023 a Japanese company, Daiso Sangyo, held a 34.21 percent stake, and the Korean parent bought it out that month. The stores you see in Korea sell products sourced by the Korean company, which is also why the beauty lines and souvenirs differ from what you’d find at a Daiso in Japan.

Tips for Shopping at Daiso Korea

Check stock before you commit. Popular products like Reedle Shot can be gone from the shelf. Ask a staff member, or look at a larger branch.

Match the strength. If it’s your first time with Reedle Shot, start with the lower numbers.

Don’t expect every product at every branch. Some products are only at larger stores.

Compare against Olive Young for products you plan to repeat. A product that’s cheaper at Daiso may not be the same size.

If you only have time for one stop, head to the Myeongdong branch with a short shopping list. Product availability changes frequently, so leave a little room for unexpected finds.

For many everyday K-beauty products, buying in Korea can be cheaper than buying overseas, but it depends on the brand, product size, exchange rate, and discounts available abroad. Eligible tourists may also receive a partial VAT refund at participating stores. The savings vary, so it’s worth comparing the final prices before you buy.

This guide covers what the instant tax refund requires, which sales are worth timing, and how Olive Young, Daiso and duty-free shops differ.

How Korean Prices Compare With Overseas Prices

The clearest example I could source is at Daiso. When VT Cosmetics launched its Reedle Shot ampoule there, the Korea Times reported a 12 ml pack (six 2 ml sticks) at 3,000 won, while VT sold its 50 ml bottle for 30,000 won. That works out to about 250 won per milliliter against 600 won. The Daiso pack is a small-format version, so it suits trying the product more than stocking up.

Overseas sale prices can close much of the gap. Stylevana’s US site, for example, listed Beauty of Joseon Relief Sun at $11.70, marked down from $18.00. A Korean shelf price plus a refund of 5–8% may not beat a discount like that by much. Comparing against the regular overseas price and comparing against a sale price give very different answers.

To check a specific product before you buy:

Find the won price in the Olive Young app or on the shelf tag.

Convert it at the current exchange rate.

Subtract roughly 5–8% for the tax refund if the store offers it.

Compare the result with the overseas price after shipping.

How the Instant Tax Refund Works

At participating Tax Free stores, the VAT is taken off at the register, so you pay the reduced price and skip the airport counter. Current guides list these conditions:

A minimum of 15,000 won per store per transaction. Guides covering 2026 say the minimum was lowered from 30,000 won, and the per-receipt cap raised from 500,000 to 1,000,000 won.

At least 15,000 won but less than 1,000,000 won per transaction, with a maximum of 5,000,000 won in eligible purchases for the entire trip.

Eligible visitors are foreigners staying in Korea less than six months. Diplomats and US military personnel stationed in Korea are excluded.

The goods must leave Korea within three months of purchase.

The refund is smaller than the full 10% because the refund operator takes a fee. One 2026 refund calculator puts a 100,000 won cosmetics purchase at roughly 6,000–6,500 won back. Smaller purchases return a lower percentage, around 5%, since fixed fees weigh more.

At the counter, show your passport and ask for a tax refund. “Tax refund juseyo” (텍스 리펀 주세요) works. Ask before paying, because the refund is handled at checkout.

When Sales and Bundles Help

Olive Young’s main sale, called Ol-Young Sale, runs four times a year in March, June, September and December, and each one lasts about a week. The Korea Herald reported the March 2026 edition as March 1–7, with discounts on around 30,000 products. Sale coupons often have to be claimed in the app before checkout, so they don’t apply automatically.

Smaller promotions called Olive Young Day have been listed for around the 25th to 27th of each month, though the dates and discounts are worth confirming in the app. Sale weeks and promotions also bring special sets and bundles, which is where the best per-item prices tend to show up.

The refund is calculated on what you pay, so a discounted price and the refund can generally both apply to the same purchase.

Olive Young, Daiso, or Duty-Free?

Store

Good for

Worth knowing

Olive Young

Mainstream skincare, sunscreen, makeup, sale sets

Many branches offer the instant refund

Daiso

Sheet masks, small ampoule packs, tools

Prices run from about 1,000 to 5,000 won; smaller sizes and limited stock

Duty-free shops

Prestige brands such as Sulwhasoo

Compare the tag with a tax-free store for the same item

Duty-free is not automatically the cheapest option for mid-priced brands, and Olive Young with a sale and the refund can come out ahead. For prestige lines the picture can flip, so a quick price check on the same product is worth the minute.

A Few Details That Are Easy to Miss

Passport. Most stores ask for the physical passport. Some Trip.PASS partner stores, including certain CU and GS25 convenience stores, accept a mobile passport instead. Check the sticker before relying on it.

Receipt type. If tax was deducted at the register, you used the immediate route. If you were handed a refund slip instead, you still have to complete the refund at an airport kiosk or counter.

Large purchases. Anything over 1,000,000 won per receipt goes through the airport or a city refund booth rather than the in-store route.

Online orders. The in-store refund applies to purchases made in the shop. Olive Young’s global website is a separate channel with its own pricing and shipping, and the company now runs a separate US website, so older guides about ordering to a US address may no longer match what the sites offer.

Prices, sale dates and refund limits shift from year to year, so the Olive Young app and the Visit Korea tax refund page are worth a look the week before you fly.

Korean convenience store food combinations take ordinary items, such as cup ramen, triangle kimbap, string cheese and instant tteokbokki, and mix them into something the packaging never suggests. Most need only a microwave and a few minutes. I found my first one by accident, when a cup of Buldak ramen turned out to be much hotter than I expected and a store employee fixed it with a triangle kimbap and a stick of cheese.

What to Buy Before You Start

A cup of ramen, a triangle kimbap, string cheese and a pack of instant tteokbokki cover most of the recipes below. Sausage and dumplings show up in a couple of them. If you plan to make the Buldak recipe, the Korea Herald recommends the tuna mayo kimbap flavor, and it’s the one I’d pick too.

Buldak Ramen With Triangle Kimbap and Cheese

I took on a cup of Buldak ramen thinking I could handle it. The heat hit fast, and I stood there with my mouth burning. A store employee who had been watching brought over a tuna mayo triangle kimbap and a stick of string cheese, mixed both into my cup, and ran it in the microwave for 40 seconds. The sauce went from sharp to creamy. It tasted closer to a rosé risotto than to the ramen I’d started with.

The same combination appears in the Korea Herald’s list of convenience store recipes, where it’s described as a way to tone down the burn of the noodles. To make it:

Prepare the Buldak cup following the label.

Unwrap a tuna mayo triangle kimbap and break the rice into chunks over the noodles. Tear the string cheese into strips and add it too.

Stir everything together, then microwave for about 40 seconds in a microwave-safe container. Stir again before eating.

Check the cup for a microwave-safe mark first. If it doesn’t have one, move everything into a bowl or ask the staff for a container.

If you’d like to taste the ramen on its own first, Buldak’s own convenience store hacks page suggests a gentler version: eat most of the noodles, then add the triangle kimbap to the leftover sauce.

The Mark Meal: Tteokbokki, Spaghetti, Sausage and Cheese

The Mark meal is one of the best-known convenience store recipes in Korea. According to a 2016 Saturday Economy article, a fan of GOT7’s Mark gave it the name. It was built from CU’s Giant Tteokbokki, Ottogi’s Cock Cock Cock instant spaghetti, sliced sausage and cheese.

Prepare the tteokbokki and the spaghetti according to their labels, then stir the noodles into the tteokbokki. Add sliced sausage and cheese on top and microwave for 15 to 30 seconds, just until the cheese melts. Look at the heat level printed on the tteokbokki cup before you buy, since the flavor is sweet and spicy at once.

Sari Gomtang Ramen With Dumplings

For a milder bowl, there’s the sari gomtang dumpling soup. Insight lists it as a combination that needs only a cup of Sari Gomtang ramen and store-bought dumplings. Prepare the ramen according to the cup instructions. Add the dumplings and heat them according to the package directions, making sure they are hot all the way through. Dumpling packs differ, so follow the heating time on the pack you buy.

The Banzz Set

The Banzz set mixes a pizza slice, instant tteokbokki, smoked chicken, string cheese and, if you like, ketchup, according to the Korea Herald. Heat the pizza, tteokbokki and chicken separately, then top the pizza with the cheese, chicken and tteokbokki and stir it together with a spoon. It’s the heaviest of these four.

Microwave and Seating Notes

Convenience store microwaves put out more power than most home ones. Nongshim’s Shin Ramyun Black cup, for example, lists separate cooking times for a 1,000W convenience store microwave and a 700W home one. If a label is only in Korean, look for the numbers next to “W” and pick the one that matches a store. When there’s no wattage listed, start short, then add 10 seconds at a time.

Seating varies. Korea by Bike notes that most stores keep a microwave somewhere inside and larger ones have a small kitchenette area for customers. Small stores, such as many near tourist spots, may have no table at all, so you may end up carrying your food back to your room. Many stores also ask you to sort cups and wrappers, so look for a broth drain or ask the staff where leftovers go.

If you end up standing in front of the microwave with a cup that’s too spicy, the person behind the counter may have a fix of their own. Mine did.

Korean photo booth tips come down to three things: carry a little cash as a backup, opt in to QR downloads before you start shooting, and put the props back when you’re done. Most booths are unmanned and open around the clock, so nobody will walk you through the first session. A few minutes of preparation saves you from a rejected card or a paper strip with no digital copy.

Korean self-photo studios such as Life Four Cuts, Haru Film, Photogray, and Photoism run on the same basic idea. You pay at a kiosk, pick a frame, and take a series of shots in a small booth. You then choose your favorites and print the strip. Props and styling corners are usually set up outside the booth.

Before You Walk In

Cash and cards

Cards are widely accepted. Korea JoongAng Daily’s overview of the main brands says booths normally take cash or credit cards, and some stores have change machines that break larger bills. It’s less clear whether a particular machine will accept a card issued outside Korea. Some travelers report declines, and I couldn’t find an official list of which booths do or don’t accept foreign cards.

A few 1,000-won bills or a 5,000-won note covers a basic session at most places. Prices differ by brand and frame. A standard Life Four Cuts session has been listed at 4,000 won on Expedia’s ticket page, and collaboration frames usually cost more. The screen shows the final price before you pay.

Check the bill slot

Some booths take only certain bills or coins, so look at the payment panel before you feed anything in. If a store has a change machine, break your larger bills first.

Decide on poses ahead of time

The shutter timer runs quickly, and the exact interval varies by booth, so nobody can give you a reliable number of seconds. Agree on two or three poses with your group before the first shot, including who stands where. A quick fix is to hold one pose through the whole countdown, then switch for the next.

How a Session Works

The screens differ slightly by brand, but the order is similar everywhere. Many booths have English instructions.

Put on props and fix your hair before you pay. The session timer may start as soon as you begin.

Choose a frame layout and the number of prints.

Pay by card or cash.

Agree to the QR code option if the screen asks. More on that below.

Take the photos when the countdown starts. Some booths use a remote button, others fire automatically.

Pick your favorite shots from the ones taken. The screen tells you how many you need to choose.

Choose a filter and a frame color, then wait for the strips to print.

Some booths offer a retake. For example, a Life4Cuts location in the US lists one retake, though that is a US franchise listing and Korean stores may differ. If the screen offers it, use it for a blurry first attempt.

Getting the Digital Photos and Video

The QR code is how you keep the photos on your phone. Scan the code printed on your strip and you can download the photos and also a short video of the shoot, as the Stripes Korea travel guide describes it. It’s worth choosing a shop that provides the QR option along with the print.

On Life Four Cuts, the Expedia listing says you need to agree to the QR option on the right side of the screen to receive digital files. On Life Four Cuts, the Expedia listing says you need to select the QR option on the right side of the screen to receive digital files. Check that option before moving on.

Download time limits are short. The same Expedia listing says the Life Four Cuts QR code is valid for 3 days from the photo date. Other brands may set different limits, so scan the code and save the files before you leave the area.

Props and Booth Manners

Props such as headbands, sunglasses, and plush hats are usually free to use, and Photo Signature is known for a large selection. Put them back where you found them, since the next group walks into whatever you leave. If a store has hair tools like a flat iron, turn them off when you finish.

Because these places are unmanned, a lost item is harder to chase down. Look for a contact number or social media account posted in the store, and double-check your bag and your phone before you leave.

If Something Goes Wrong

A card gets declined: Try once more, then switch to cash rather than testing different cards at the machine.

The code won’t scan: Scan it in good light, and try a different phone camera app if the first one doesn’t pick it up.

The booth ran out of paper or froze: Check the store for a service contact before you leave. Keep your receipt or a screenshot if the machine gives one.

Each brand has its own quirks, and the machines get updated, so a booth you use next week may not match this walkthrough exactly. The screen is the final word on price and what comes with it. Select the QR download option, save your files that same night, and try a second brand if you have time.

If you’re shopping at Olive Young for the first time, you don’t need to buy a full shelf of products. Start with a cleansing oil and gentle foam cleanser, a soothing toner, a hydrating serum, a moisturizer, and sunscreen. All five steps below have a product that is easy to find in the store. Buy those first, then decide whether you need anything stronger.

1. Cleansing: Manyo Pure Cleansing Oil and a Gentle Foam

The cleansing oil helps remove sunscreen and makeup, while the foam cleanser removes the remaining residue. Manyo’s Pure Cleansing Oil is the oil to look for here. For the foam, Be Plain’s mung bean cleanser or Skin1004’s Centella foam both fit a mild, low-irritation routine.

If you wear nothing on your face on a given day, the foam alone is enough.

2. Toner: Anua Heartleaf 77% Soothing Toner

Anua’s toner is built around heartleaf (houttuynia) extract, which is where the “calming” reputation comes from. It may be a good option for dry or sensitive skin, although individual reactions can vary. Medihill-style toner pads are the quicker option for a bag or a hotel room (see the add-ons below).

3. Serum: Torriden Dive-In Hyaluronic Acid Serum

Torriden’s Dive-In line is a hydration serum with hyaluronic acid. A hydrating serum is a straightforward place to start if you’re new to serums and want to focus on moisture rather than stronger active ingredients. If you are choosing only one product from this whole list and your skin feels tight, this is a reasonable one to pick.

4. Cream: Aestura Atobarrier365

Atobarrier365 is the barrier-repair cream on this list. Product listings from Aestura retailers describe a triple lipid complex of ceramides, cholesterol and fatty acids, with niacinamide in the formula. It is a rich cream, so it fits dry and sensitive skin best.

For oily skin, a lighter option such as Dr.G’s Red Blemish line is worth comparing on the shelf before you commit to the richer cream.

5. Sunscreen: Round Lab Birch Juice or Beauty of Joseon Relief Sun

Both are SPF50+ PA++++, and both are marketed as light daily sunscreens without a white cast. They feel different on the skin. Round Lab’s Birch Juice is the richer, more moisturizing one, and a comparison from Mirai Skin calls it the better fit for dry and sensitive skin. Beauty of Joseon’s Relief Sun (rice extract and probiotics) has a lighter, slightly glowy finish. Beauty of Joseon describes it as a chemical sunscreen, which is worth knowing if you normally buy mineral ones.

If you have oily skin, you may prefer the finish of Beauty of Joseon’s Relief Sun. If your skin is dry, Round Lab’s Birch Juice sunscreen may feel more moisturizing.

Cheap Add-Ons: Spot Patches and Sheet Masks

Two inexpensive things are easy to add at the register. Olive Young’s Care Plus spot patches are thin enough to wear under makeup. Mediheal sheet masks (the Madecassoside and Tea Tree lines come up often) and toner pads are a quick, low-risk way to try a calming step without buying a full-size product.

What to Skip at First: VT Reedle Shot and High-Strength Retinol

Viral products tend to sit near the front of the store, and some are not meant for a first purchase. Reedle Shot products and high-strength retinol can cause irritation, redness, or stinging, particularly when introduced too quickly or used on skin that is not accustomed to them. If you want to try one, patch test first and start with the lowest strength, which for Reedle Shot is the 100 level.

Getting the Tax Refund at the Register

Tourists can get an immediate tax refund at Olive Young. According to Olive Young’s Myeongdong Global store page, a purchase of 15,000 won or more plus your physical passport is what you need, and the in-store refund works per receipt up to 1,000,000 won. The same page puts the refund at roughly 5 to 8 percent of the purchase amount. The rules can differ by store, so ask at the register before paying.

Bring the passport itself, not a photo of it. Gift sets (the ones with extra mini products or a bonus item) are worth a look while you are there, since they often cost less per product than buying each piece on its own.

Whatever you choose, start with a routine you can maintain. After you’ve used the products for a while, you’ll have a better idea of which ones are worth buying again.

Say your hotel check-in is at 3 p.m. and you land at 10 a.m. You can wheel a suitcase through Seoul Station, down a few flights of stairs and into a café that has no room for it, or you can leave it somewhere for a few hours. Korea has several apps and services for this, and each one handles a different situation.

This post goes through the main options for visitors: T Locker, T-Luggage, ZimCarry and Lugstay. It also covers what to do if you’d rather not install anything.

Seoul Subway Lockers With the T Locker App

T Locker (또타라커) is the app for lockers inside Seoul subway stations. According to the sources I checked, it covers roughly 270 stations. You can look up a station, see which lockers are free, and reserve one ahead of time. One source mentions booking about two hours in advance, so check the in-app screen for the current rule.

Payment and sign-up matter for visitors. The sources say the app accepts overseas credit cards such as Visa and Mastercard, and that you can sign up with an email address instead of a Korean phone number. Some of them also mention WeChat Pay. Try registering before you leave home, so you aren’t dealing with verification codes on airport Wi-Fi.

Prices run by size and by weekday or weekend. For the first four hours, small lockers are around 2,200 to 3,100 won, medium ones around 3,300 to 4,600 won, and large ones around 4,400 to 6,100 won. Extra hours are charged on top.

Size is the catch. The lockers fit backpacks, carry-ons up to about 20 inches, and 24 to 26 inch suitcases in the large slots. Anything near 28 inches may not fit, so don’t plan around it.

Oversized Bags and Airport Delivery: T-Luggage and ZimCarry

For a 28-inch-plus suitcase, a golf bag or a stroller, A staffed luggage counter is usually a better option. T-Luggage (티러기지) runs staffed storage and delivery at busier points such as Seoul Station, Hongik Univ. Station, Myeongdong, Gangnam and the Gimpo and Incheon airports. Counter hours are usually around 9 a.m. to 10 p.m., though they differ by location, so look at the branch you plan to use.

Delivery is the other half. Both T-Luggage and ZimCarry (짐캐리) can send bags between the airport and a hotel, or between a station and a hotel, on the same day. Same-day delivery depends on a drop-off cutoff, which the sources put at roughly 10 to 11 a.m. If your flight lands in the afternoon, the bag may arrive the next day instead, so read the cutoff on the booking page before paying.

Third-party guides list prices of roughly 15,000 to 25,000 won per bag. It probably varies by route and size.

Lugstay: Storing Bags in Cafés and Shops

Lugstay (럭스테이) places bags in spare space at cafés, restaurants and small shops. It’s a backup for when station lockers are full or your bag is too big for one. The limit is that shop hours apply. Many of these places close in the evening, and not all offer overnight storage, so confirm the closing time when you book.

Station Lockers Without an App

KTX stations such as Seoul Station and Busan Station also have ordinary coin lockers that work with cash or a card on the spot. No app is needed, which helps if your phone data isn’t set up yet. They can fill up quickly on weekends and holidays, so don’t count on a free one at midday on a Saturday.

If You Land Late or Fly Out Early

Subway station lockers can’t be reached once the station shuts for the night, roughly from midnight to 5 a.m. If your flight is early or you get back to the city late, you won’t be able to collect the bag. Either pick a storage option that stays open later or ask your hotel to hold it.

Small Things Worth Doing Before You Go

Take a photo of the locker number and the exit you used. Station layouts look similar.

Screenshot the receipt or confirmation screen, including any QR code or password.

Search for lockers in Naver Map or Kakao Map. Google Maps walking directions in Korea are unreliable, and the Korean apps list the lockers more accurately.

Quick Answers

Do I need a Korean phone number for T Locker? According to the sources, no. The app supports email sign-up and overseas cards.

Will a 28-inch suitcase fit in a subway locker? Probably not. A staffed counter or a delivery service is the safer choice.

Can I get my bag after 11 p.m.? Not from a subway station locker once the station is closed. Look at a shop-based option or your hotel.

Can I send my bag from Incheon Airport to my hotel? Yes, through services such as T-Luggage or ZimCarry, as long as you hand it over before the cutoff.

Consider installing T Locker and Naver Map before your trip, then decide on the day whether the bag stays in a locker or goes straight to the hotel.
