How to Buy KTX Tickets as a Foreigner

How to Buy KTX Tickets as a Foreigner: Website, App, and KORAIL Pass

Foreign visitors can buy KTX tickets on KORAIL’s English website at letskorail.com or in the KORAIL+ app, and both accept overseas credit cards. Seats go on sale at 7:00 a.m. Korea time, two months before the travel date. Until October 1, 2026, that window was one month, so older guides may give you the wrong number. A KORAIL Pass can save money on a multi-city trip, but it only gives you the right to ride. You still have to reserve a seat separately.

Booking on the KORAIL English website

The official site is the best place to start because it doesn’t require a Korean phone number.

  1. Open letskorail.com and choose English from the language menu in the top right corner.
  2. Enter your departure and arrival stations, date, and time. Some trains leave from Yongsan or Suseo instead of Seoul Station, so check the station name on the result before you pick a train.
  3. Choose a train and a seat class.
  4. Type your name exactly as it appears on your passport.
  5. At the payment step, select the option for a card issued overseas. Your card may ask for 3D Secure verification through your bank’s app or a text message.
  6. Save the confirmation to your phone, or print it.

The Korea Times reported the move to a two-month window in September 2026. One older notice on KORAIL’s own English pages may still say one month. If the two numbers conflict, check the booking calendar on the site for your date.

Booking in the KORAIL+ app

KORAIL+ is the app that replaced the separate KORAIL Talk and SRT apps after the two operators merged on September 1, 2026. If an older guide tells you to download Korail Talk, look for KORAIL+ instead. Foreign cards have been reported to work in the app, though acceptance can differ by card. If a payment fails in the app, try the website before retrying the same card.

If your foreign card gets declined

Overseas cards fail at checkout for a few ordinary reasons. The card may not have 3D Secure enabled, the bank may block the charge as unusual, or the browser may have blocked the verification pop-up. Allow pop-ups, turn on overseas payments with your bank, and try once more. If it still fails:

  • Try the same booking in the app, or on the website if you started in the app.
  • Use a booking platform such as Trip.com or Klook. Trip.com’s KTX page says it takes foreign cards and PayPal. Compare the total with KORAIL’s own fare before you pay.
  • Buy at a station staffed counter. Some travelers report that station kiosks require a Korean-issued card, while staffed ticket counters may accept foreign cards.

Is the KORAIL Pass worth buying?

For a short trip, often not. The September 2026 merger with SRT came with an average fare cut of about 10% on KTX routes, which makes single tickets cheaper than they were. A Seoul–Busan ticket costs roughly ₩55,000 to ₩60,000 depending on the train and date, and the cheapest adult passes have been listed from about ₩131,000. Passes have gone through several changes this year, so check the current price and pass types on KORAIL’s pass page before comparing.

A rough way to compare: one Seoul–Busan round trip is around ₩110,000 to ₩120,000, which is less than the cheapest pass. A pass may become worthwhile if you take three or more long one-way trips within its validity period, such as traveling from Seoul to Busan, then to Gyeongju, and back to Seoul.

Eligibility is narrow. The pass is for visitors holding a foreign passport who have been in Korea for less than six months, per the Korea Rail Pass entry on Wikipedia. Korean citizens, including dual nationals, are excluded, according to Pelago’s listing. It doesn’t cover subways or temporary tourist trains. Older guides say it doesn’t cover SRT either. Since SRT has merged into KTX, check on the pass page whether trains from Suseo are now included.

Reserving seats with a pass

Buying the pass doesn’t put you in a seat. You get a 16-digit pass number, and you use it on KORAIL’s site to reserve each train. Resellers describe two free seat reservations per day. After those are used, you can still board on a standing basis with the pass and your passport. Note that the reservation window for pass holders may not match the two-month window for regular tickets, so look at what the pass page says.

Reserve the trains you care about as soon as your dates are firm. Friday evenings, weekends, and holiday periods fill first.

Korean train stations have no ticket gates for KTX. Check the departure board for your platform, then find the car and seat number shown on your ticket. A crew member checks tickets on board.

Bring your passport. With a pass, bring the pass voucher and your seat ticket too. Pass sellers state that a screenshot of a seat ticket isn’t accepted, so use the app or a printout instead.

Before your trip

Book as soon as your dates are fixed if you’re traveling on a holiday weekend. KORAIL hadn’t announced the booking schedule for the Seollal 2027 holiday as of early October, so it’s worth watching its notices for that.
