How to Use Kakao T Without a Korean Phone Number

If you’re coming to Korea for the first time, you might be wondering whether you can use Kakao T without a Korean phone number. It’s a question that comes up pretty often when people are getting ready for their first trip to Korea. The good news is that you can, although the payment setup is a little less straightforward than you might expect.

Can You Use Kakao T Without a Korean Phone Number?

When you open Kakao T for the first time, you’ll be asked to enter a phone number. It doesn’t have to be a Korean number, so you can use the number you already have at home. This part threw me off at first, too.

Tap the country code and change +82 to your own country code. For example, a US number would use +1, while a UK number would use +44. Enter your number, wait for the verification code by text, and you’re good to go.

For many people the account setup goes through without trouble, but some foreign numbers fail verification, and a new account can take a while to be approved. If you travel with a data-only eSIM, the verification text goes to your home number, so sign up before you leave. And if you later switch to a Korean SIM, set up email login too, or you may get locked out. The part that can cause trouble is adding a payment method.

The Payment Problem With Foreign Cards

The Payment Problem With Foreign Cards

The confusing part starts when you try to add a payment method. Kakao T may ask you to register a card, but this is where foreign visitors can run into problems with a non-Korean phone number.

If you’re using a foreign card and a foreign phone number, you may find that the card registration doesn’t go through. That’s where it gets confusing. You can get through the phone verification just fine, and then suddenly run into a problem when you try to add your card.

Kakao’s own payment FAQ lists foreign-issued Visa, Mastercard, JCB, and AMEX cards as accepted for regular Kakao T taxi rides, but registration can still be rejected depending on your card issuer.

Paying the Driver Directly

Paying the Driver Directly

If the card registration doesn’t work, check the payment options for “Pay to Driver” (기사님께 직접 결제 in Korean). The exact wording can vary depending on the app version, but the idea is the same: you don’t need to add a card to the app. I don’t add a card to the app either. I just pay the driver directly.

Once you select that option, you can book the taxi without registering a card first. The booking and ride work normally, and you can still see the driver’s location and follow the route in the app. When you arrive, you pay the driver directly.

If you’re paying this way, I’d carry some Korean won with you just in case. Whether a driver accepts a foreign card can vary, so I wouldn’t rely on a card alone.

K-RIDE

K-RIDE as an Alternative

If you don’t want to deal with the payment setup in Kakao T, there’s another option: k.ride (often written K-RIDE), Kakao Mobility’s taxi app for international travelers.

You can sign up with a phone number plus an email, Google, or Apple account, so you don’t need a Kakao account, and it accepts cards issued outside Korea. The app screens are in English, Japanese, and Chinese, and destination search and driver chat are translated automatically.

K-RIDE is designed for international users and supports overseas cards. If you don’t want to deal with the card setup in Kakao T, I’d install K-RIDE before leaving for Korea and have it ready on your phone. I also like having both apps available, especially when traveling around Seoul late at night or in a less busy area.

Typing Your Destination

Searching for a destination in English usually works well for hotels, subway stations, and major tourist spots. I wouldn’t rely on English for every address, though. For smaller restaurants, guesthouses, or places tucked away on a side street, I usually keep the Korean name or address saved on my phone.

So if you’re wondering whether you can use Kakao T without a Korean phone number, the answer is yes. Just don’t wait until you’re standing outside Incheon Airport trying to figure out the payment options. Set everything up before your trip, and you’ll have one less thing to worry about when you arrive.
